The first thing to consider when you look for a Home Theatre System is what you want from it. Most people look for a quality image, great surround sound, easy control and a reasonable price.

If these are your criteria as well then the Philips HTS9800W just about meets them all, with the only complaint being that the price is towards the top end of the market. Still, if you want a quality cinema-like experience then you won’t have any quibbles with one.

The sound is pumped out through a 6.1 speaker system which has to be heard to be believed. There are omni-directional tweeters for a 360 degree dispersal of the high frequencies and the various speakers are all connected to wireless receiver for ease of use and an uncluttered room. A lot of people rate the sound quality as the single most important aspect of their wireless home theatre, and if that is the case with you then you will probably be delighted with the Philips HTS9800W purely on that basis.

However, there is more, and the system’s features allow you to play a lot of different types of discs and even upscale DVDs to suit either 720p or 1080i HD viewing. The images are sharp and concise and if you use this system with a really good big screen HD television you will have about as close to a cinema experience as you can get using the current technology.

The price is perhaps a little steep for some people, at £700 for UK buyers, but for the quality on offer it can’t be said to be an unreasonable price tag.

The only real complaint you might have is that the stylish boxes that make up the system take up a little bit more room than you might have hoped for. All in though, if you want a great home theatre system and you don’t mind paying a top end price for it you can’t do much better than this one.
